Colorado School of Mines, also referred to as simply CSM, is a public teaching and research university, located in Golden, which is a Home Rule Municipality that served as the county seat of Jefferson County, in the US state of Colorado, having a population estimated at a number of more than 17 000 inhabitants, during the 2005 census.
CSM was established somewhere between 1873 and 1874, by the Episcopal Church, and became a state institution in 1876, when Colorado attained statehood. For the quality education offered, in 2009, it was ranked 77th in America among national universities. The university currently has an enrollment of approximately 4000 students, of which 3000 are undergraduates, and offers educational programs in various fields of studies, mainly in areas such as engineering and applied science, also being devoted to special expertise in the development and stewardship of the Earth's natural resources.
CSM's athletic teams are known as the Orediggers, who compete in NCAA Division II, in 18 varsity sports, for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are blue and silver, and their mascots are Marvin the Miner & Blaster the Burro.
